Derek Evans

President and Chief Executive Officer, and Director

Derek was appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer, and a Director in August 2018. He is a veteran oil and gas industry executive with over 35 years of experience. From May 2009 to March 2018, he served as the President, CEO and Director of Pengrowth Energy, where he led the Company through a major transformation, streamlining its asset base from 35 properties to two growth assets, with over $9 billion of development opportunities. Prior to joining Pengrowth, Derek was the President, CEO and Director of Focus Energy Trust, a dividend paying royalty trust company. During his tenure at Focus, Derek was successful in increasing the market valuation approximately five times, while distributing more than $400 million to unitholders. Mr. Evans holds a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from Queen’s University and is a registered professional engineer in Alberta.

Eric L. Toews

Chief Financial Officer

Eric is the Chief Financial Officer at MEG Energy. Prior to joining MEG in 2013, he spent eight years as a Managing Director in the Global Energy group at BMO Capital Markets based in Calgary, where his role included providing strategic financial and capital raising advice to Canadian oil and gas companies. Eric’s previous experience includes leadership roles with major Canadian and U.S. investment banks based in Calgary, Toronto and New York, with a focus on the Canadian oil and gas sector. Prior to entering Investment Banking, he worked with two global public practice accounting firms. Eric holds a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Regina. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant, a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and has obtained the certified designation (ICD.D).

Darlene Gates

Chief Operating Officer

Darlene is the Chief Operating Officer at MEG Energy. Prior to joining MEG in 2021, she served as the President of ExxonMobil Alaska. Darlene brings over 26 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, including leadership roles with Imperial Oil in Cold Lake, Alberta. As COO, Darlene is responsible for all aspects of the production operations of MEG's oil and gas business with the Company's operational areas and direct support technical functions reporting to her. Darlene holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Victoria and is a registered professional engineer in Alberta. She is also an Honorary Colonel in the Royal Canadian Airforce.

Chi-Tak Yee

Chief Technology Officer

Chi-Tak is the Chief Technology Officer at MEG Energy. With over 33 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, he has been a leader in thermal development. Since joining MEG in 2004 he has held roles of increasing responsibility with the Company, with oversight for reservoir management and project development, facility operations, cost leadership, and technological development and application. Chi-Tak was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2018 and in 2021 became MEG’s Chief Technology Officer. Prior to joining MEG, he held technical engineering and leadership roles with Petro Canada and Imperial Oil. Early in his career, He studied under and worked with the late Dr. Roger Butler at the Underground Test Facility (UTF), where he provided reservoir and production engineering leadership in the first successful field demonstration of the steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process in the Athabasca region using surface drilled horizontal well pairs. Chi-Tak holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary, and is a registered professional engineer in Alberta.

Lyle Yuzdepski

Senior Vice President, Legal and General Counsel

Lyle is the Senior Vice President, Legal & General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at MEG Energy. Prior to joining MEG in January 2020, Lyle was General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the Mancal Group where he handled major commercial transactions in a broad range of industries and advised boards of directors and trustees in a variety of different contexts within the Mancal Group. Previous experience also includes his tenure with McCarthy Tétrault LLP as Partner. Lyle practiced general corporate and commercial law and securities law specializing in complex major transactions, including project development, public and private financings, acquisitions and divestitures, and private equity. Lyle graduated from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 1993 as the Gold Medalist. He is a member of the Bar Association of Saskatchewan and the Bar Association of Alberta and is a Certified Family Enterprise Advisor (FEA).
